Public service reform and austerity require either ending services or delivering them differently. Big data, insight, customer centric marketing and disruptive technologies have changed the landscape in which professional communicators work.
Strategic communications needs to develop at pace to help public services meet these challenges. This may mean better reputation management, behaviour change coupled with service reform, changing the relationship between citizen and state and more effective ways to explain, engage and inform. New skills are required including leadership, policy, social insight, data analysis and content strategy.
